FICS - best free chess server. Many MFOers play there: MFO on FICS. We like BabasChess client.
http://www.chessclub.com - this one has fee, but you can play as a guest.
http://www.playchess.com - Hilbi says it is the best chess server today. Not free, though.

Xboard / Winboard (Includes GNU Chess, can be set to 100 different chess engines, and can be used to play games via ICS chess servers)
BabasChess- our preferred FICS client.
